Okay Jane, Here is my Update

We initally decided to use “YUI” framework to power our builder but due to compatibility reasons and the lack of flexibility. Check the here. Due to this, we decided to build a custom YUI Grid Builder Theme ScratchPad Builder which will be powered by jQuery. I have already begun work and will be soon posting an online demo of the builder as it progress goes about

        For now,

        1. User can select the size of the template page i.e (100%, 974px,750px)
        2. User can modify sidebar position and size (i.e left or right + size of sidebar)
        3. User can add additional columns to content.

Although, code cannot be still ported to WordPress theme format. But the builder helps to create a skeleton of the Theme and then it will be converted to Wordpess Theme Format.

Currently YUI Grids CSS is being used to define the layout for the themes and for the cosmetic looks, jQueryUI CSS Framework will be used.

        1. The primary issue is, porting the theme to WordPress theme format, which I am wondering as to how to go about.
        2. How much customization to offer ? This is very important as every User has different ideas and different needs.

        Planned for the Coming Week

        1. Try to make a proper feature list.
        2. Try to use a better CSS Framework for cosmetics if possible.
        3. Look for Alternatives on how to export to WordPress Theme Format.

I currently am in France with very limited internet access, but I figured that I’d scoot my first official update in. While I won’t be able to get much done for the next two weeks, I’ve been recently working on creating an editor that should allow for the user to alter the layout of a theme.

    Without further ado: http://koopersmith.wordpress.com/2009/05/28/weekly-update-1/

Jane: is there any way I could have my meeting when I’m back in the states? A community Q&A sounds perfect, but I can’t really pin down a good time while I’m overseas.

Weekly Updates: I have just finished th…

    Weekly Updates:

I have just finished the modified and more detailed proposal, and I am discussing it with my mentor about the more technical parts of the implementation. I will post the proposal sometime later. As a sneak preview, there are 9 things I will focus on:

    Implementation 1. The ‘Album’ post_type.
Implementation 2. The separation between ‘images’ and ‘photos’.
    Implementation 3. The ‘Photostream’.
Implementation 4. The shortcode [album id={id}]
    Implementation 5. Zip-upload functionality.
    Implementation 6. Album Pages.
    Implementation 7. Photo Sorting Interface.
Implementation 8. Clean URLs for Photos.
Implementation 9. More distinct buttons for adding photos.

I am working extended hours to catch up the missed planning time due to my exams last three weeks, but everything seems to be heading towards a great direction.

Today is Wednesday so it’s time for my status update.

On the planning side of things:

I pretty much have in mind what I want to do and how it should be done. I’m also going to setup a nice work schedule for the next few weeks because I work better that way.

I’m waiting on a reply from my mentor for some questions I have. I also move out to a new apartment on Monday so I’ll be getting a proper work area setup away from distractions 😉

On the programming side of things:

I’ve began some working going through query.php to abstract some of the old search functionality. I’ve also began some of the new MySQL Full/Text search plugin programming.

I plan on finishing a basic search plugin separated from the core with the hooks/bells and whistles of searching through other content types and having different flags and then plan to write the sphinx plugin to showcase what kind of search plugins you can build.

So… not much yet but it’s something to report. Next weeks reply should be more in depth.

Time for my first weekly update. Sadly I don’t have much of anything tangible to report as I haven’t started coding yet. I should tomorrow though.

Hi everyone. I’ve been checking in with…

Hi everyone. I’ve been checking in with the mentors to make sure everyone is on track. You should all have started coding as of May 23rd according to the Google timeline. So, for those of you who are still revising proposals, this is a gentle reminder that you should be coding by now, and need to wrap up the proposal-revision stage pretty much immediately.

I want to set up a time for each of you to be in IRC to answer community questions about your project/Q&A. It should happen sometime within the next two weeks, so please leave a comment on this post with dates/times that would work for you, and I’ll put together a schedule and publish it on the wordpress.org development blog.

I’m glad to see that Anthony, César and Diego have posted their required updates here on the days assigned to them. Now that we are in the coding stage, everyone needs to post at least one update per week on their specified day from the first post on this blog. Additional posts may be made as frequently as you like. Now that we are in the coding phase, backup mentors will be paying attention to this blog to keep an eye on projects and help out as needed.

Remember that by midterm, your work needs to be functional, with the second half of term devoted to adding functionality, testing, revision cycles, and eventual integration as needed, in order for Google to pay your midterm stipend.

    Good luck, and happy coding!

I should be available early afternoon (1-3PM CST or so) Monday through Wednesday the next few weeks for sure. If that doesn’t work, I can figure something else out. I’m pretty much always idling in the channel as it is, so even outside the designated times people can ask me questions and I’ll see them when I get back to my computer.

Also, I’ll have an update on my project later today, since, you know, it’s Tuesday and all.

Whoops. Apparently I’ll be without internet access for part or all of the week of June 8th. I’ll still be working, just disconnected. Next week is fine though.

    • anthonycole 11:26 pm on May 26, 2009 Permalink

The next week or so is crappy for me because I have finals (about to take one right now), but I should be available from the 6th or so onwards (in transit on the 4th, going to australia for a bit).

I have some time on tuesdays, at 7PM CLST [-0300], :).

Since my schedule is so spastic at the end of a school year + graduating + moving out I’m not sure what times for sure during the next two weeks I can be on for a chat BUT if I could do Saturday the 30th between 5:30 and 8:30 sometime (which would be great for me).

    • Jane Wells 3:16 am on May 31, 2009 Permalink

We’ve been crazy busy in San Francisco getting ready for WordCamp SF (this weekend), so I haven’t set up the chats yet, as I was still trying to work out when to schedule people. I’m going to create a group Google calendar that has our deadlines, and will drop in some potential IRC chat time slots for everyone, which you can then respond to with confirmation or by suggesting an alternate time. Look for that early this week.

Howdy! I suppose it’s my turn. During …

I suppose it’s my turn. During this time, I’ve been reading some papers related to my project and implementing fast-prototyping if I think it worth.

First, I focused my research on unsupervised learning, implementing the K-means (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-means) and testing it against a dataset of about 8,000 news headlines. The result could be found http://cesar.la/projects/cluster-abc-ln (Spanish dataset), and for those who are interested in the project, it could be found at http://github.com/crodas/phpcluster/tree/master

Then, I’ve been reading about Hadoop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hadoop), then I started writing a set of PHP-wrappers (with Haddop streaming), at the end I reproduced almost the same Java API. This project is not public yet, I will publish it when I need it for my project. You might be wondering “why Hadoop?”, basically it will be useful for big sites that uses BP.

During this week I’ll create a public repo at github, and I will start coding there.

    Best regards,
    Happy coding!

P.S 1: I dunno if there will be a repository for all the projects, but still I’d like to have mine at github.
P.S 2: I don’t know if I can but, I’d like to write my week status report at my blog too.

I guess I should update this thing every once in a while as well :).

I’ve been doing a bit of brainstorming over the last few days as my project is so broad and I just can’t do it all at once.

I guess I’ll put a little survey out there and ask: is there anything that really bugs you guys about putting an event together? Do you find anything annoying? I’m not just talking about a WordCamp, it could be lunch with a group of friends or a group project meeting. I’m finding that things tend to repeat themselves even at a larger scale, and it would be best to get a ton of user input on this.

    • Jane Wells 5:57 pm on May 26, 2009 Permalink

Anthony, I’ll get in touch with you about prioritizing features.
